2026: Drury’s Dream: The New York Rangers
July 16, 2025: Wow, it is only 82 days until the opening face-off for the new New York Strangers. Once again our illustrious leader, former Captain Chris Drury has reorganized the seemingly perpetual “one year away” team in hopes of for-filling his promise of winning a Stanley Cup. Let’s recap…
October of 2025, this “rebuild” of the NEW YORK RANGERS will be EIGHT (8) seasons in the making. Today, July 16, 2025 is Day #3033 of the notorious rebuild… In May 2026 it will be 32 years since MARK MESSIER hoisted THE CUP in MSG.
Over these years prior to and then will Drury the coaches who were supposed to take the team to the promised land have come and gone: Tom Renney, John Tortorella, Alain Vigneault, David Quinn, Gerard Gallant, Peter Laviolette and now according to Drury “the guy we wanted all along, Mike Sullivan”.
We (me) take it all back to “the letter of February 8, 2018” when the “organization” (Sather/Gorton) made our season tickets virtually worthless for the rest of that season and ultimately for a few years to come.
Then, as the rebuild was in full swing we witnessed the May 3, 2021 game where the Capitols’ Tom Wilson cross checked Pavel Buchnevich in the back of the head. Panarin sans helmet attempts to intervene. Wilson dumps Panarin to the ice like a rag doll. Wilson was given a double minor for roughing and a 10 minute misconduct while mocking the Rangers from the penalty box. Panarin was out for the rest of the season. Wilson gets no suspension just a $5000.00 fine. The Rangers lose 6-3 and are officially out of playoff contention. When the NHL failed to suspend the Capitals’ forward the RANGERS issued an unprecedented statement criticizing the league and fired team President John Davidson and General Manager Jeff Gorton. Which led us to the evening of May 5, 2021 when the Capitols and The Rangers next played. A brawl ensued at the opening face-off, it was noted by all that The Rangers needed a Nick Fotio, a fighter. Changes had to and were made. May 5, 2021, Chris Drury is elevated to President and General Manager of the NY Rangers…
So now, here we are again as we wait and see if the wheeling and dealing Drury has finally put together his dream team to go with his “coach we always wanted”.
Oh, Ye, gentle mistresses and most distinguished gentlemen, and others… The opinions and observations are solely my own views, and I take full responsibility for any errors of fact, not to mention any predictions that prove to be wildly inaccurate.
